Tottenham Hotspur brought Serge Aurier to the Premier League last summer from Ligue 1 giants PSG after missing out on Porto’s Ricardo Pereira.

Reports suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur are considering renewing their interest in Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira this summer do not bode well for one Serge Aurier.

According to A Bola (21 March, page 6), Spurs are keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old Portuguese international, who they bid £13.2 million for last summer.

Pereira’s contract at Porto is due to expire in 2019 and, with the spectre of Financial Fair Play hanging over their head, it is understood that the Primeira Liga leaders might be forced to sell a few key players with the one-time Nice loanee – who has a £22 million release clause – possibly at the front of the queue.

But what does this say about Aurier?

After all, Spurs paid £23 million to sign the Ivorian powerhouse from PSG last summer, as reported by the BBC, after they missed out on Pereira. So does Mauricio Pochettino’s continued interest in the Porto man suggest Aurier could be under pressure?

The former Toulouse man has established himself ahead of Kieran Trippier as the club’s first-choice right-back of late, but Aurier has been involved in far too many needless flash points so far; see the stupid red card against West Ham and the equally unnecessarily penalties given away against Real Madrid and Juventus.

Aurier has looked erratic and arguably even a liability on occasions. Pereira, by contrast, is a far more consistent player.

There is surely no room at Tottenham for three right-backs, however.
