Wigan Athletic defender Donervon Daniels is a reported target for Championship trio Norwich City, Sunderland and Cardiff.

Even if Wigan Athletic blow their lead at the top of the League One table and somehow miss out on promotion, Donervon Daniels should still be playing Championship football next season.

As reported by the Sun, three second tier sides are keen on the 24-year-old centre-back, who has impressed on loan at Rochdale.

Wigan loaned Daniels out to the Lancashire club after he missed most of last season through injury but, on this form, he should walk back into Paul Cook’s team at the end of the campaign. The former West Brom youngster is out of contract in the summer but it is understood that the Latics will look to tie him down to a new contract.

But there is a very real chance that they could lose him on a free. Because the Sun claims that Cardiff City and Norwich are keen, and you could understand why Daniels would be tempted by a move.

Cardiff may even be a Premier League side next season as they are fourth in the table, just four points adrift of second. Norwich, meanwhile, appear to have an exciting long-term plan in place revolving around talented youngsters and a progressive coach in Daniel Farke.

Sunderland then – the third Championship side keen on the centre-back- face little room for error. If Chris Coleman’s side want to lure Daniels to the Stadium of Light, they simply must survive in the second tier.

Because if Wigan are promoted, and Cardiff and Norwich remain Championship teams, why would Daniels be willing to stay in League One?

Despite Saturday’s valiant three-goal comeback at Bristol City, Sunderland are still three points from safety. And if they are finding it hard enough to entice players to Wearside, the task will not get any easier after relegation.
