There is a reason why Everton were so determined to bring Marcel Brands to Goodison Park from PSV Eindhoven last summer.

The Toffees’ sporting director is a man famed for spotting diamonds in the rough, signing little known players for peanuts and selling them for huge fees after they have developed into world-renowned talents.

During his trophy laden spell in Holland, which included Eredivisie titles at AZ Alkmaar and PSV, Brands uncovered Dries Mertens, Gini Wijnaldum, Sergio Romero, Moussa Dembele and Hirving Lozano, signing the quintet for less than £25 million.

That is without mentioning Santiago Arias, Kevin Strootman and many more.

So the last thing that Everton fans should do is to scoff at their interest in a little known Swiss defender.

After all, Eray Comert could be the latest potential superstar unearthed by the eagle-eyed Brands.

The Mail claims that Everton are very interested in the 21-year-old Basel centre-back, who has started 16 league games this season and could cost around £7 million.

Comert is hardly a household name but, if Brands’ past record is anything to go by, he could be worth a lot more in the very near future.
