Leeds United failed to bring Anthony Limbombe to Elland Road in 2015 and now he has been called up by Belgium.
It has taken a while for Anthony Limbombe to show Leeds United what they are missing.
But after a forgettable debut season with Club Brugge, the enigmatic winger has rediscovered the sort of form that encouraged Leeds to make a £1.5 million bid in the summer of 2015 before trying again as he swapped NEC Nijmegen for the Jupiler League 12 months later.
Limbombe has six goals and seven assists in all competitions this season, and has been rewarded with a first ever call-up to the Belgium senior squad as a result.
Considering that Limbombe will be rubbing shoulders with Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard and co over the international break, that is quite an achievement. So you can imagine that the 23-year-old would be worth far more these days, especially with the ink still drying on a contract until 2021.
But that should not stop Leeds from attempting to make a new move for Limbombe this summer, with the fleet-footed winger in the form of his life back in his homeland.
Leeds have looked particularly toothless in attack ever since Paul Heckingbottom was appointed to replace Thomas Christiansen at the helm of Elland Road last month.
Samu Saiz has struggled to find form since returning from his ban, while Ezgjian Alioski’s impact has diminished as the season has gone on.
Limbombe, an unpredictable and explosive player with an eye for the spectacular, would be a terrific addition to the squad and the sort of player Leeds are missing.
But is it too little too late now?
