Scottish Premiership champions Celtic want a right-back – but they won’t be signing Swansea City’s Connor Roberts as Mikael Lustig’s replacement.
Well that didn’t last long.
The Express reported on Saturday that Celtic wanted to sign Swansea City right-back Connor Roberts in 2019 as a potential replacement for the out-of-contract veteran Mikael Lustig.
Roberts has been one of the most eye-catching breakthrough talents in the Championship this season, a series of all-action displays establishing him as the first choice for his club while forcing his way into the Welsh national team to boot.
But, just five days later, Celtic’s hopes are over. The 23-year-old has ended any speculation over a move to Parkhead by signing a new four-year deal to stay at the Liberty Stadium.
Fortunately for Celtic, however, they have another potential right-back target who, unlike Roberts, is yet to put pen to paper over a new deal.
The Sun claimed earlier in November that the Scottish Premiership champions had revisited their summer interest in Akhmat Grozny full-back Milad Mohammadi, who impressed for Iran at the World Cup.
Attack-minded and versatile enough to play on either flank, the 25-year-old is due to become a free agent in a few months’ time so the hope will be that Celtic can get him on the cheap.
And with Roberts now out of the picture, it makes sense to go all-out for Mohammadi instead.
