Everton are yet to hand a Premier League debut to Yerry Mina, while Chelsea loanee Kurt Zouma is also waiting for a chance in The Toffees’ starting XI.
Michael Keane was under pressure to impress in his second season as an Everton player.
The England international endured a hugely disappointing debut campaign on Merseyside, making a mockery of the £30 million it took to sign him from Burnley in the summer of 2017.
But the early signs are positive. Keane was solid in the 2-1 win against Southampton on Saturday, showing the physical strength and aerial prowess that saw him stand out at Burnley, after assisting one of Richarlison’s two debut goals against Wolves the week before.
Though regardless of Keane’s decent start to the season, it seems that the former Manchester United youngster is on borrowed time, because two of Marco Silva’s summer signings are waiting in the wings.
Chelsea loanee Kurt Zouma was on the bench against Southampton while Yerry Mina, a £28.5 million signing from Barcelona, will return to action in the very near future after a foot injury.
Both Zouma and Mina are quicker, arguably more athletic centre-backs and, given that they were players brought in by Silva and new director of football Marcel Brands, are expected to play a big role in the Everton revolution.
Silva too has spoken openly about his admiration for young Mason Holgate too.
So Keane is facing up to life on the bench, regardless of an impressive start to the 2018/19 campaign.
