Jonas Hector is tipped to leave Bundesliga outfit Cologne – but should Everton rival Liverpool for the German’s signature?

If there is one team on Merseyside who could do with a left-back this summer, it is Everton.
The Toffees are worryingly over-reliant on a 33-year-old Leighton Baines and had absolutely no one to replace him in the starting XI, meaning the right-footed Cuco Martina found himself becoming the club’s first choice left-back for about four months.
But it is not Everton who are being linked with a summer move for Cologne’s Jonas Hector. Instead, it is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who are keen on the 36-time German international, who is likely to be Joachim Low’s number one left back in this summer’s World Cup, as reported by Kicker.

27-year-old Hector has been with Cologne for eight years but the Billy Goats are second from bottom in the Bundesliga and, if they go down, their fans’ favourite will surely be on his way to bigger and better things.
And Klopp, who will know Hector from his time in the Bundesliga, is understood to be very interested. This is despite the outstanding form of Andrew Robertson over the last couple of months and the improvements made by Alberto Moreno, if you forget about that nightmare second half in Seville that is.

But surely an Everton side who have been linked with a whole host of left-backs cannot stand aside and let their Merseyside rivals bring Hector to Anfield unopposed.
Technically gifted and versatile enough even to play in central midfield, Hector deserves to be right up there at the top of Everton’s wish-list.
