Lee Wallace has made one Scottish Premiership appearance for Rangers this season and has been linked with Wigan Athletic.
Lee Wallace has missed pretty much the whole of this season through injury. But, even if the experienced defender had been fit, it is hard to imagine him forcing his way into Rangers’ starting XI.
Wallace’s future at Ibrox has been in doubt ever since he was suspended following an alleged row with interim boss Graeme Murty in April’s Scottish Cup defeat to Celtic. And, according to the Scottish Sun, the former Hearts man could be on his way to Wigan Athletic in January.
Latics manager Paul Cook is understood to have a good relationship with Rangers counterpart Steven Gerrard, giving him hope of agreeing a cut-price fee.
And it seems that Wallace, despite having made over 250 appearances for the club since arriving in 2011, will not be missed at Rangers.
Croatian international Borna Barisic has made a positive impression since he arrived from NK Osijek in the summer, with his pinpoint crossing ability making him crucial to Rangers’ attacking game plan.
The Gers also have Jon Flanagan in reserve; the former Liverpool defender having impressed since arriving from Anfield.
So Wallace is now Rangers’ third choice left-back and, at the age of 31, it makes little sense for him to stay in the stands until the end of the season.
A January move to Wigan is an opportunity that looks tailor-made for all parties.
