Josh Windass was named the SPFA Player of the Month for February, but the Rangers star is still being critcised by some sections of the Ibrox support.

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

What more does Josh Windass have to do to win over his Rangers critics?

The midfielder has made great strides over the last couple of months under Graeme Murty and now has a mightily impressive 17 goals in 36 games in all competitions.

Windass was even recognised for his performances by earning the SPFA Player of the Month award for February, but it seems he still has a long way to go before he can convince all of those on the Ibrox terraces.

And, perhaps understandably, the former Accrington Stanley star is a little tired of the criticism coming his way, responding to one Rangers fan who demanded he be sold in the summer by defending his own work rate and commitment to the cause, as reported by the Scottish Sun.

Windass has a point. Yes, he does have a habit of going missing in games at times, perhaps best reflected in his otherwise anonymous performance in the Old Firm derby defeat against Celtic after opening the scoring with a well-taken early goal.

But the bare statistics cannot be argued with, and the fact that Windass has scored more goals form midfield this season than any of the strikers at rivals Celtic’s disposal should not go unnoticed.

Players must take criticism on the chin at times, but Windass has been one of Rangers stand-out performers this season and has certainly outperformed many of the other, bigger names in Graeme Murty’s squad.

There is a reason Rangers refused to let the midfielder leave in January amid plenty of interest from south of the border. Windass, since the winter window shut, has repaid the club’s faith in style and it is about time he got the credit his performances deserve.

Though, having said that, a little more consistency wouldn’t go amiss.
