Ross McCormack is back on form after swapping Aston Villa for a loan spell at Melbourne City – but have Leeds United tried to bring him back to Elland Road?

Ross McCormack’s move to Australian side Melbourne City in the summer offered the striker the chance to rekick-start his career and rebuild his reputation after that annus horribilis at Aston Villa.

The 31-year-old cost the Midland giants £12 million from Fulham in the summer of 2016, per the BBC. But just three goals, an ill-fated loan at Nottingham Forest and a pair of broken electronic gates later, McCormack was heading Down Under with his name in tatters.

But after just seven games with Manchester City’s Australian sister club, McCormack is looking, and performing, like the technically gifted goal machine we all know he can be.

The Scot has five goals in seven games for the side managed by former Manchester United reserve coach Warren Joyce – including a sublime free-kick against Perth Glory on Friday.

And according to The Mail, McCormack’s sudden return to form has a number of Championship sides enquiring about the possibility of taking him on loan for the second half of the season – although it’s understood that the striker, perhaps unsurprisingly, would rather stay and continue to rediscover his golden touch in the Melbourne metropolis.

But what are the chances that Leeds are one of the clubs who have asked about McCormack’s availability? He remains a respected figure at Elland Road having netted 53 goals across four Championship seasons with the club – including 28 the season before making a big-money move to Fulham.

And while Leeds have found some semblance of form recently, winning two of their last three, the lack of a proven Championship striker remains a nagging concern. But McCormack, who scored prolifically for Leeds, Fulham and Cardiff, is exactly that.

Based on his form in the sky blue of Melbourne rather than the claret of Villa, McCormack may just be that Chris Wood replacement Leeds are still searching for.
