Former Rangers youngster Greg Stewart returned to stun his former club in the Scottish Premiership draw against Kilmarnock on Wednesday at Ibrox.
Greg Stewart certainly had plenty to prove as he travelled to Ibrox on Wednesday night.
The Kilmarnock forward has a history with Rangers after all. The 28-year-old started his career with the Glasgow giants but, like countless young hopefuls, suffered the bitter blow of being released thanks to that old adage. He was, the Rangers coaches thought, ‘too small’.
According to the Scottish Sun, Rangers were mulling over a deal to bring Stewart back to Ibrox in January 2016. But, despite his superb form for Dundee, they opted against giving the speedy forward a second chance.
So his stunning goal in midweek, curled brilliantly into the top corner to help Killie to a deserved 1-1 draw, will have been even sweeter.
With just two months until the January window, could this old saga be revisited after Rangers witnessed Stewart’s resurgence first hand?
The Stirling-born forward has been a revelation since he returned to Scotland on loan at Kilmarnock from Birmingham City, taking his tally to four goals in eight games while causing countless problems to opposition defences with his direct style and poise in possession.
Stewart looked exactly the sort of player Rangers have missed during goalless performances against Spartak Moscow and Aberdeen, not to mention their stilted display against Steve Clarke’s Ayrshire outfit.
Rangers have brought Kyle Lafferty and Allan McGregor back recently, while they have also been tipped to re-sign both Steven Davis and Lewis Macleod. So why not Stewart.
