Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted that he would be open to a move to the Scottish Premiership with champions Celtic.
Gabby Agbonlahor represented Celtic in Saturday’s Match for Cancer fundraiser and it seems that he’s grown to like the green and white stripes.
The 31-year-old is a free-agent after being released by Aston Villa in the summer. But, if he was given the chance to kick-start his career at Parkhead, you can be certain that he would not wait around to sign on the dotted line.
“It’s a massive club and even just to come here and play in a charity match is an honour. I’ll try and speak to Brendan Rodgers and we’ll see what happens,” Agbonlahor told the Scottish Sun.
The one-time England international has been well past his best for a number of years now and Celtic fans might not be too excited about the potential signing of a man who has scored three league goals in three years.
But Agbonlahor still has something to offer, particularly for a Celtic side one striker down after Moussa Dembele’s deadline day move to Lyon.
The Sun (26 August, page 61) claimed that Brendan Rodgers wanted to sign Southampton’s Republic of Ireland forward Shane Long before the end of August and Agbonlahor could bring many of the same characteristics to Parkhead.
If he’s willing to get back to full fitness, Agbonlahor would provide natural pace and a player capable of leading the line and running in behind. He could terrorise defences north of the border if he puts those disappointing years at Aston Villa behind him.
On a short-term deal, this may be a risk worth taking.
