Celtic wanted Sean Maguire at Parkhead – but instead he is tearing up the Championship with Preston North End

Celtic might have gotten back to winning ways with a 2-1 win against Hamilton at the weekend but it was another rather uninspiring attacking performance in which the Champions again seemed to lack invention and verve in the final third.

Since the turn of the year, The Hoops have failed to score against Dundee, Motherwell, Kilmarnock, St Johnstone and Zenit St Petersburg in the Europa League.

So, in hindsight, a bargain deal to sign Sean Maguire after a prolific spell at Cork City would perhaps look even better now than it would have done last summer.

The Scottish Sun claimed last year that The Hoops were hoping to bring the former West Ham youngster to Parkhead. Maguire had scored 52 goals in 68 games for Cork but, in the end, put pen to paper with Preston North End instead.

And though he has suffered with injuries during his debut season at Deepdale, Maguire has looked a fantastic addition when fit. The Irishman scored five goals in five games since returning after five months out – and was deservedly nominated for the Championship Player of the Month award.

Instinctive, quick and always good for a bit of excitement, Maguire is in brilliant form right now and could have livened up a Celtic frontline that appears to have grown a little stale of late.
