Wolverhampton Wanderers took perhaps their biggest risk of the Fosun regime when they broke their transfer record to sign Adama Traore.
The Premier League newcomers agreed to meet the £18 million release clause in Traore’s contract, after weeks of speculation linking them with the Middlesbrough winger. But although the former Barcelona starlet was much improved in 2017/18, he remains far from the finished article and can still be prone to bouts of maddening inconsistency.
Traore scored five goals and set up ten more in the Championship last season. But displays like the play-off semi-final second leg defeat to Aston Villa, where the 22-year-old ballooned countless crosses out of play, show why that £18 million price-tag seems like a big risk.
And to highlight the risk further, it seems that Traore could be set for a whole new role at Molineux. Wolves need cover at right-wing back and the Spaniard’s frightening pace on the overlap and ability to beat players one-on-one means the position could suit him down to the ground, at least from an attacking perspective.
Nuno Espirito Santo will have to be at his best to coax consistent brilliance out of the player.
