Tottenham Hotspur’s Anthony Georgiou left the Premier League to prove himself in League One with Paul Lambert’s Ipswich Town.

For Mauricio Pochettino, mentality is just as important as quality.

You’ve got to have more than a fine first-touch and plenty of technical ability if you want to force you way into Tottenham Hotspur’s senior squad. With Spurs now a regular at the top of the Premier League table and Champions League finalists as recently as May, Pochettino needs players with a ruthless winning mentality and the ability to step up when the going gets tough.

So a loan spell at Ipswich Town could be the making of Anthony Georgiou.

A 22-year-old midfielder who has made more appearances for the Cypriot national team than he has for Tottenham, Georgiou moved to the League One outfit on a short-term spell in August hoping to get some much-needed game time under his belt.

And while he has been in and out of Paul Lambert’s side so far, starting half of The Tractor Boys league games in 2019/20, a short-term spell at Portman Road could prove to be invaluable to Georgiou’s development.

Ipswich, after all, are desperate to return to the Championship at the first time of asking and they’ve certainly made a promising start to their first campaign in the third tier since 1957. The Anglian outfit are unbeaten after six games, winning four of those, and they already have a two point lead over Lincoln City, Coventry, Blackpool and Wycombe Wanderers at the top of the table.

Promotion is looking like a very real possibility for Ipswich at the first time of asking and Georgiou can only benefit from spending the next few months at a side who go into every game expecting, or demanding, to win.

The academy graduate, who impressed at left-back in pre-season, signed a new deal until 2021 earlier in the summer. And, with the future of Danny Rose uncertain and Ben Davies seemingly falling out of favour, there may be a place in Pochettino’s plans up for grabs very soon.
