Cast your mind back to January 2018 and few would have claimed that Liverpool had made an excellent decision selling their star man to Barcelona.

After a protracted transfer saga, Philippe Coutinho finally bid farewell to Anfield. He joined the La Liga champions for a staggering £146 million according to Sky Sports, becoming one of the most expensive players in football history.

Considering that Coutinho had blossomed into one of Europe’s best creative midfielders at Liverpool, it seemed the Samba star was destined to shine alongside Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and co at the Camp Nou.

But it is fair to say this hasn’t gone to plan. Coutinho started brilliantly in Barca colours, yet this season has been one to forget. He has made just 16 La Liga appearances and, after a series of underwhelming displays, has increasingly found game time hard to come by.

Goal reports that Coutinho is frustrated by life in Catalonia and it seems that Barcelona are frustrated with him. The club’s chiefs are reportedly willing to sell the 26-year-old for a fee of around £70 million – half the fee they paid for him just 13 months ago.

Suddenly, Liverpool’s decision to cash in when they did looks a good one.
