Scottish Premiership champions Celtic are hoping to lure Norwich City loanee Angus Gunn to Parkhead but Premier League giants Liverpool could have a say.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Motherwell at Celtic Park on December 2, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Brendan Rodgers’ hopes of luring a new goalkeeper to Celtic in the summer transfer window could receive a huge blow, if his former club Liverpool pull off a world record deal.

According to the Sun (18 March, page 60), Celtic are keen to sign the 22-year-old shot-stopper Angus Gunn from Manchester City in the hope of offering him first-team football at Parkhead.

Gunn has shone on loan at Norwich City this season, even earning an England call-up in November, but obviously faces an almost impossible task at City with Ederson Moraes firmly established as Pep Guardiola’s number one.

But Celtic face competition, with the Sun adding that Stoke City are interested, too. And Liverpool could hold the key to Gunn’s future.

Because, the Mirror claims that Jurgen Klopp is hopeful of signing a shot-stopper in the summer with Stoke’s Jack Butland his number one target ahead of Roma’s Brazilian international Alisson Becker who, for all his talents, has no Premier League experience.

The same cannot be said about Butland, however, who has been Stoke’s first choice since Asmir Begovic left for Chelsea in 2015. The report claims that Liverpool would have to make Butland the world’s most expensive goalkeeper with his price-tag set at £40 million.

If Liverpool do lure the former Birmingham wonder-kid to Anfield, however, it could hand Stoke the initiative to pursue Gunn, bolstered by a huge wad of cash burning a hole in their back pocket.

So, for Celtic’s sake, Rodgers should be praying that Butland stays put in the Potteries.
