The former Rangers captain would certainly be an interesting appointment.

It seems as if Rangers are intent on harking back to the past to make the future look a little less bleak.
The early front runners to replace Mark Warburton at the Ibrox helm are remnants of a greater time; Alex McLeish led Rangers to two Scottish Premiership titles while the prospect of enticing players of Frank de Boer’s ilk to Glasgow evaporated a long time ago.
Furthermore, former captain Craig Moore seems to be on the shortlist for the Director of Football role, although his impact at Brisbane Roar suggests he could make a world of difference.
There would be far less certainty if Barry Ferguson was to return to the club he led to five league titles however. An inspiration as a player, it is fair to say Rangers miss the fearsome figure of Ferguson in their engine room.
Yet, whether his leadership and infectious resolve could permeate the pitch from the sidelines is another matter entirely.
However, as John Hartson pointed out in his column for the Scottish Sun, Ferguson was Rangers’ driving force on the pitch while, on the other side of the city, Neil Lennon patrolled the surface of Parkhead.

Perhaps it is time the blues followed in their green-and-white rivals’ footsteps.
Lennon, a former Celtic skipper, had no managerial experience whatsoever when he was appointed manager in 2010. Four years later, he departed having led the club to three successive league titles.
Ferguson, meanwhile, at least has the benefit 117 games with League Two side Clyde on his CV. And, by all accounts, he is doing a sterling job, leading them to the play-off final last season.

Appointing the 39-year-old would be a major risk, especially when a number of experienced names are unattached and looking for work. However, if there is any time to rip up the blueprint and start again, it is now.
Ferguson’s presence would certainly give the fans something to cheer after five years of misery.
