Everton were reportedly hoping to sign Daniel Wass from La Liga side Celta Viga but he has just joined Valencia
Farhad Moshiri’s arrival as majority shareholder in 2016 might have given Everton access to funds they previously could only dream of, but that does not mean the money has been spent sensibly or wisely.
The Toffees have not even troubled the top six during Moshiri’s two years at the helm, despite spending more on transfers than ever before in their history.
The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Yannick Bolasie, Ashley Williams and Davy Klaassen (below) have proved to be little more than expensive flops, showing that money is not everything when the scouting system is far from adequate.
In Celta Vigo midfielder Daniel Wass, however, the Toffees appeared to have finally found what could have been a bargain signing in an era where the club has overspent and ended up resembling the proverbial kid in a candy shop.
One of the most influential attacking midfielders in La Liga over recent seasons, Wass was available for as little as £5 million and Everton were interested, according to the Sun (June 3, page 60). The former Evian star is not a household name and was even omitted from Denmark’s World Cup squad but don’t let that fool you.
Wass is a combative and creative midfielder who would have fit right in under Marco Silva. He also takes a mean free-kick and is capable of the spectacular, as Real Madrid found out last season when he lifted a glorious chip over Keylor Navas.
But the Toffees have now missed out on what could have been the best bargain signing of the Moshiri reign. Because Wass has now signed for Valencia, reports Football Espana.
