Matt Targett shone during the Championship with Fulham and could reportedly return to the second tier with Steve Bruce’s Aston Villa

There would be a real sense of irony if Aston Villa sign Matt Targett.
Because the Southampton left-back was Fulham’s first-choice target this summer. But with The Saints demanding £20 million, according to TEAMtalk, The Cottagers then changed tack and nabbed Joe Bryan from under Aston Villa’s nose.
Now, a Villa side jilted by Bryan at the eleventh hour could get revenge by signing the player Fulham wanted all along.

Though petty payback is hardly the reason why Aston Villa want to sign the 22-year-old Targett on loan for the 2018/19 season, as reported by The Mirror (August 19, page 64).
It is reported that Southampton are ready to let the England U21 ace leave on a temporary basis with Ryan Bertrand restricting his first-team opportunities at St Mary’s. And Aston Villa, who can sign players on loan until the end of August, are very interested.
Targett was terrific during a similar loan spell at Fulham last season, making the left-back position his own as Slavisa Jokanovic’s side beat Steve Bruce’s Villa in the play-off final at Wembley. So it goes without saying that he is exactly what Aston Villa need after missing out on Bryan. That’s what the fans think anyway.
