Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson was the surprise hero in Saturday’s dramatic win at Birmingham City.

With the clock ticking over 90 minutes and the score tied at 1-1 at St Andrews’, Gary Rowett’s Derby County were desperately crying out for a moment of inspiration against his former club Birmingham City.

Though it’s fair to say few Derby supporters would have been pinning their hopes on Scott Carson making the difference in stoppage time. Yet, Tom Ince’s last-gasp winner owes everything to a moment of Scholes-esque vision from the veteran goalkeeper.

After guiding a sublime ball over the top of the Birmingham defence, Ince raced in behind to lob home the most dramatic of winners and ensure that Rowett’s Midas touch remains in effect at Derby. The 43-year-old has now won more games in the last eight days than his former club have managed since they took the increasingly baffling decision to give him the boot in December.

And while Ince will take the plaudits, Carson once again deserves plenty of praise from Derby supporters. The 31-year-old has been one of the most under-the-radar performers in The Rams squad this season and the fact that he has just one clean sheet in his last nine Championship games is more an indictment of the defenders in front of him rather than his own performances.

On Saturday, however, Carson has earned admiration for his attacking output rather than his heroics on the goalline.
