Rangers have been linked with a number of Steven Gerrard’s former teammates since the 37-year-old surprisingly seized the reigns at Ibrox recently.

But, despite reports tipping Martin Skrtel, Jermain Defoe, Lucas Leiva and co with a move to Glasgow, talk surrounding one Fernando Torres is perhaps the biggest indication of the optimism and excitement that Gerrard brings to Rangers.

Torres, after all, will be on the market for free this summer with his contract at Atletico Madrid due to expire on 1 July.

And the 34-year-old striker could hardly be departing his boyhood club in a more fitting fashion. After 11 years as an Atletico player across two spells, Torres finally lifted his first trophy in red and white when Diego Simeone’s side cruised past Marseille in last week’s Europa League final.

And, in his 384th and last game for the Madrid giants, Torres signed off in perfect style with two goals in a draw with Eibar.

While a move to MLS appears to be on the cards for a player who has won nearly everything the game has to offer, Rangers fans are still dreaming that the old Gerrard/Torres partnership can be reunited at Ibrox.

After Sunday’s clinical brace, it seems that Rangers fans are more keen than ever for one of the greatest strikers of his generation to wind down a remarkable career in Glasgow.
