Jackson Irvine made his first appearance at the KCom Stadium after signing for Hull City from Burton Albion in the summer.
Hull City looked to have pulled off a real coup when they beat off huge Championship competition to sign Burton Albion star Jackson Irvine in the summer.
Arriving for £2 million (Hull City Independent), the Australian international scored 10 goals in the second tier to keep The Brewers in the league against all the odds last season and was expected to add an another dimension to a Hull side aiming to rebound directly back to the Premier League after another relegation in 2016/17.
However, while manager Leonid Slutsky may take some degree of the blame after starting the attacking midfielder in an unsuited deeper role in his home debut against Preston North End on Tuesday night, it’s fair to say the fans were largely underwhelmed by Irvine’s display.
In fact, it was his slip that allowed Callum Robinson to nab a winner with just two minutes remaining as his career at the KCom Stadium got off to the worst possible start.
There’s no doubting, however, that Irvine will prove to be an astute acquisition eventually, his ability to score from deep likely to be a valuable asset to a club shorn of stricken star striker Abel Hernandez.
And things can only improve from here.
