It is no exaggeration to suggest that Leeds United might just have pulled off one of the most impressive transfer coups in their recent history.

Kiko Casilla has arrived at Elland Road from none other than Real Madrid, sealing the deal on Thursday. And, to make the move even more impressive, the 32-year-old goalkeeper has cost absolutely nothing – despite the fact he had 18 months left on his contract at the Bernabau.

On paper, Leeds now arguably have the best and most decorated shot-stopper in the Championship, a proven and exhilarating addition at a time when a long-awaited return to the Premier League appears to be on the horizon.

But how have Real Madrid fans reacted to Casilla’s departure? It is telling that, despite making just 43 appearances for Los Blancos in three-and-a-half years, the Spaniard leaves with the goodwill of one of the world’s most demanding fanbases.

Casilla might have played second fiddle behind Keylor Navas, then third fiddle behind Thibaut Courtois, but he still lifted 10 trophies during his time as a Madrid player, including three straight Champions League crowns.

And he established himself as one of La Liga’s top goalkeepers during a stellar spell at Espanyol, earning a single cap for the Spanish national team.
