Premier League outfit Everton sold defender Ramiro Funes Mori to La Liga side Villarreal in the summer – and they were right to do so.

If any Everton fan was wondering why Ramiro Funes Mori was sold to Villarreal for £10 million back in June, as reported by Goal, the defender’s debut for the La Liga side should offer a reminder.

Villarreal’s new centre-back had been enjoying a fairly assured start to life on the Castellon coast, as Real Sociedad came to town on Saturday. Until five minutes before half time, that is.

Funes Mori then suffered the kind of needless brain-lapse that contributed to his failure to really kick on at Goodison Park. Instead of controlling a simple throw in, he attempted an overly-elaborate volleyed back-pass and inadvertently set Sociedad’s Brazilian forward Willian Jose away on goal.

Jose, as he usually does, finished the chance in ruthless fashion, leaving Funes Mori red faced and staring at the floor. That goal cancelled out Villarreal’s first-half opener and paved the way for La Real to seal an impressive 2-1 away win after the interval.

Funes Mori cost the Yellow Submarines an opening day victory. And it seems that number of Villarreal fans are already very unimpressed with their new signing.

Everton’s decision to part with Funes Mori, along with the likes of Ashley Williams, Davy Klaassen and Cuco Martina, shows that the club are no longer willing to accept mediocrity.
