Do Hladky and Dawson links mean Wes Foderingham’s Rangers exit is inevitable?

Wes Foderingham has started just four Scottish Premiership games since Steven Gerrard took over at Rangers in 2018.

Wes Foderingham of Rangers looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers FC and Celtic FC at Ibrox Stadium on September 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It looks more likely than ever now that Wes Foderingham will be on his way out of Rangers at the end of the season.

One of the longest serving players in Steven Gerrard’s squad, the goalkeeper joined from Swindon Town back in 2015 when Mark Warburton was the manager and The Gers were still stuck in the second tier. But with Foderingham’s contract expiring at the end of the season, his fifth year at Ibrox will surely be his final one, too.

Though you could hardly blame the 28-year-old, who has started just four league games in the last year and a half, for eyeing a fresh start. MLS outfit DC United are apparently ready and willing to let him follow in Wayne Rooney’s footsteps, according to the Mail.

What’s more, Tuesday brought us the names of two highly-rated shot-stoppers who have been seemingly lined up to replace Foderingham on the blue half of Glasgow.

The Star claims that Rangers are rivalling Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County to sign Cameron Dawson, the 24-year-old with cat-live reflexes who has only lost his place as Sheffield Wednesday’s number one thanks to the enduring brilliance of Kieren Westwood.

Czech ‘keeper Vaclav Hladky, meanwhile, went one step further by telling the Daily Record that Rangers have been in contact regarding a potential move to Ibrox. Hladky has arguably been the best glovesman in Scotland this season, standing out in a struggling St Mirren side.

Rangers number one Allan McGregor isn’t getting any youngster at 37, even if he continues to defy Father Time by producing virtuoso displays both at home and abroad. It would be almost negligent for a team with genuine title ambitions to let a near-40-year-old custodian go unchallenged with only young Robbie McCrorie and the seldom-seen Andy Firth competing with the soon-to-be-departed Foderingham behind the scenes.

Dawson or Hladky would not be merely a reliable back-up – they are two talented, improving goalkeepers capable of succeeding where Foderingham has failed and challenging for McGregor’s place.
