Premier League giants Everton swooped to sign Henry Onyekuru in the summer and he has scored for fun at Anderlecht since in the Jupiler League.

If recent history is anything to go by, Everton fans should be thrilled by the news that Henry Onyekuru has been awarded Belgium’s Talent of the Year award.

The likes of Axel Witsel, Lucas Biglia, Youri Tielemans and Leon Bailey have won the title over the last decade or so.

And Onyekuru, who has scored 31 goals in 57 Belgian league games for Eupen and Anderlecht since the start of the 2016/17 season, is certainly a deserving winner.

The question is, however, whether his form in the less than prestigious Jupiler League means he is ready for his big break at Everton.

The Toffees paid £7 million to sign one of the hottest prospects in all of Europe during last summer before loaning him back to Belgium with Anderlecht as he aims to secure a work permit to play in the Premier League.

On stats alone, Onyekuru has starred. He has nine goals in 14 league appearances for Anderlecht and, with Everton seemingly needing one more striker to complete their attacking unit, has a good chance of fighting for a first-team berth at Goodison Park next season.

But the 20-year-old has had his fair share of critics too, not least from his Anderlecht manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck. He dropped the striker for a November clash with Club Brugge, claiming he was distracted, and has slammed Onyekuru for a lack of team ethic and defensive discipline too, as reported by Het Belang Van Limburg.

Needless to say, a lackadaisical approach to the other side of the game will not go down well with Sam Allardyce.

Onyekuru has the talent, but a lot to learn, too.
