Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers have raided Coventry City for Ben Stevenson rather than Tom Bayliss.
Wolves enjoyed a cheap yet successful end to the January transfer window.
While the popular return of former fan favourite Benik Afobe on loan from Bournemouth has dominated the headlines, Wolves snapping up a bargain deal to sign Coventry City starlet Ben Stevenson should not go unnoticed.
The 20-year-old midfielder has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Molineux but will return to League Two high-flyers Coventry until the summer.
Stevenson may be a defensive midfielder but he boasts excellent technique with a passing range not to dissimilar to that of former Sky Blues favourite James Maddison, currently tearing up the Championship with Norwich City.
But the fact that Stevenson is far from guaranteed a regular role in Coventry’s side for the rest of the season may give Wolves fans some reason for concern.
Stevenson missed the start of the season through injury and, when he returned, his place in Mark Robins’ starting XI had been taken by the precocious 18-year-old Tom Bayliss.
The Mail state that Bayliss is a player in high demand. He was watched by Tottenham as Coventry stunned Premier League Stoke City in the third round of the FA Cup, and the Spurs fans would have been impressed as the scheming midfielder produced a Man of the Match display.
In fact, Bayliss has arguably overtaken Stevenson as the most exciting youngster currently at Coventry. Time will tell, however, whether Wolves have signed the right man.
