Wolverhampton Wanderers’ chances of signing Derby County striker Chris Martin might just have got a lot better.

It is understood that Wolves are one of a number of Championship clubs keen on the Scotland international, who is expected to leave Pride Park this month after falling to fifth place in the Rams’ pecking order.

It appears, however, that a number of Wolves’ rival suitors have either accepted defeat or ruled themselves out of the running.

Relegation threatened Sunderland had agreed a deal to sign Martin on loan last week but, according to the Chronicle, the 29-year-old is clearly unconvinced by a move to the Stadium of Light and has instead headed off to Dubai for a warm weather training camp with his Derby teammates.

And with the Black Cats concerned that a deal could fall through, the Sunderland Echo reports that Chris Coleman’s side might now make a second attempt to sign Lukas Nmecha on loan from Manchester City.

A deal for the highly-rated 19-year-old, who has eight goals in seven Premier League 2 games this season, had looked in doubt but it appears that an injury he suffered recently is not as serious as first thought.

And in another boost for Wolves, Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic has said in no uncertain terms that Martin won’t be returning to Craven Cottage after spending a tumultuous 2016/17 loan spell in the capital, as reported by the Derby Telegraph.

Fulham are ruled out while Sunderland are eyeing up alternatives, leaving the coast a little clearer for Wolves.
