Southampton are reportedly interested in Besiktas defender Pepe – but Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been linked in the past.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have a lot to thank Jorge Mendes for.

Ever since the super-agent started helping Wolves out in the transfer market, the Black Country giants have gone from the bottom half of the Championship to the middle of the Premier League table.

In the last two-and-a-half years, Mendes has given Wolves access to players the likes of which Molineux has not seen in a generation or more with Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Diogo Jota and Rui Patricio all starring in Old Gold currently.

But could Wolves’ most high-profile signing be yet to occur?

Turkish Football reported in July that Wolves had made a move to sign one of Mendes’ most recognisable clients, the 35-year-old centre-back Pepe. It is reported, however, that Turkish giants Besiktas did not want to let him go.

But that could change heading into the January transfer window. According to Sabah, Besiktas could now look to cash in with Pepe out of contract at the end of the season.

Just imagine the impact Pepe, a three-time Champions League winner and 101 time international, could have on Nuno Espirito Santo’s youthful Wolves squad – particularly the contingent of Portuguese players.

That’s not to say Pepe would only make an impression in the dressing room, however. He remains a top centre-back and would strike the fear of god into opposition forwards.
