Vincent Janssen looked set to leave the Premier League and Spurs before the end of the month.
The squad list on Tottenham Hotspur’s official website makes for interesting reading.
There is only one player in Spurs’ entire first-team squad who has not been given a shirt number with one game of the Premier League season already behind them – Vincent Janssen.
The ill-fitting Dutchman has had the number nine shirt ever since his £18.6 million move from AZ Alkmaar in 2016. But there is now a vacant spot between Harry Winks in eight and Harry Kane in 10. Janssen is stuck in his own little section at the bottom of the web-page, the only player without a number to their name.
And though this might seem inconsequential, it must be pointed out that other exit-linked players such as Josh Onomah and Fernando Llorente have retained their numbers at the start of the 2018/19 season.
So any hopes that Janssen might have had of salvaging his desperate Spurs career don’t look great right now.
The 24-year-old, who has scored just one Premier League goal from open play, is facing an uncertain future as things stand.
A return to Fenerbahce, where he spent last season on loan, scoring five times in 17 matches, looks unlikely after the Super Lig runners-up signed Islam Slimani on a temporary basis from Leicester City instead.
