Despite reported interest from Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, Liverpool have loaned Ben Woodburn to Championship outfit Sheffield United
After months of speculation, we finally know where Ben Woodburn will be playing his football next season.
Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were one of the clubs most closely linked with the 18-year-old sensation, with the new Ibrox boss hoping to use his Liverpool connections to lure the teenager to Scotland on a season-long loan.
The Mail on Sunday (back page) reported as recently as June 24 that Rangers had made a fresh approach to sign Woodburn, who replaced Michael Owen as the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history back in 2016.
Instead, however, the Welsh international has joined Sheffield United instead after Reds manager Jurgen Klopp warned him off a move to Championship rivals Aston Villa, according to The Telegraph.
Now, Rangers do have Alfredo Morelos firing again if his matchwinning display against Osijek is anything to go by, while the highly-rated Umar Sadiq has joined on loan from Roma. And, according to the Daily Record, The Gers are attempting to bring the 30-year-old Kyle Lafferty back to Ibrox from Hearts.
But Woodburn would have given Rangers something different, a potentially elite talent who has already proven that he knows where the net is at club and international level.
Woodburn has been compared to the likes of Owen, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush and, like Patrick Roberts at Celtic, had the raw quality to take Scottish football by storm. Rangers have already signed Ryan Kent, Ovie Ejaria and Jon Flanagan from Liverpool but this 18-year-old would’ve been the best of the lot.
