Nottingham Forest released goalkeeper Dimi Evtimov but he has made a real impression in League One with Burton Albion.

Dimi Evtimov certainly had a lot to prove when he joined Burton Albion on a short-term deal in the summer.

The Bulgarian goalkeeper had been released by Nottingham Forest in September after making a grand total of two appearances in six years at the City Ground. And you could forgive Forest fans for wondering whether they made a mistake discarding Evtimov so readily.

Because the 24-year-old has made a real impact at Burton; not that Forest fans will need reminding.

The popular shot-stopper was in impressive form as the Brewers beat his former club 3-2 in the EFL Cup last month, shortly before he was handed a deserved call-up to the Belgian national team.

Speaking to Burton’s official website, manager Nigel Clough admits that he has been very impressed by Evtimov, suggesting that he is now in contention for a long-term contract at the Pirelli Stadium.

“We would love to have Dimitar around as he has been brilliant and to have three goalkeepers challenging for the No 1 spot would be a lovely position to be in,” said Clough, who enjoyed two spells with Nottingham Forest in his playing career.

Back at the City Ground, Forest manager Aitor Karanka can call upon Costel Pantilimon and the experienced Luke Steele right now.

But, if Evtimov continues to impress at Burton, questions are bound to be asked whether the East Midland club got rid of a man who could have been their long-term future number one.
