Championship outfit Leeds United want Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie and Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood at Elland Road.

There’s a clear difference between the unknown, under-the-radar imports Victor Orta brought to Leeds United last summer and the players who have been linked with a move to Elland Road this time around.

Whereas the likes of Caleb Ekuban, Pawel Cibicki, Samu Saiz and Ezgian Alioski arrived in West Yorkshire via Albania, Sweden, Spain and Switzerland, it seems that Leeds are now doing what the fans wanted them to in the first place – sign players who have proven themselves in England’s second tier.

According to The Mail, Leeds are keen to bring in Oli McBurnie from Swansea City this summer on the back of his prolific loan spell down the road at Barnsley.

The 21-year-old has scored eight goals in 12 games for The Tykes since arriving at Oakwell in January, and the Scottish Sun claims that he would welcome a move to Elland Road, having been born and raised in Leeds.

This report emerged a few hours before The Sun stated that Leeds are battling Celtic and Southampton for the Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

The 33-year-old has been one of the Championship’s most impressive shot-stoppers over the last few years.

So does this show that Leeds have learned from the mistakes they made last summer, when a raft of cheap imported additions arrived and struggled to settle in English football?

The play-offs are a distant dream at Elland Road with Saiz perhaps the only one of Orta’s signings who can be considered a success. It was a risky strategy – one that has failed spectacularly.

McBurnie and Westwood, however, would be far safer signings.
