David Unsworth was really impressed by Tyler Onyango as Everton secured a Premier League International Cup draw with PSV Eindhoven.
Everton U23 coach David Unsworth has piled praise on Tyler Onyango after a 1-1 Premier League International Cup clash against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday, while speaking to the club’s official website.
The Toffees have won the Premier League 2 trophy in two of the last three seasons with the likes of Tom Davies, Mason Holgate, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jonjoe Kenny establishing themselves in the first-team as a result.
Now, 16-year-old Onyango will be hoping to follow in their footsteps after he made a real impact against the Dutch giants in Southport.
Onyango, making his first ever appearance for Unsworth’s U23 side after making his name in the U18s, showed great awareness to break up a PSV attack before helping to set up Anthony Gordon’s goal in the hard-fought draw.
“I thought he was absolutely terrific. He’s someone who was on our radar, but we thought it may be January before he stepped up,” the former left-back said of Onyango, who started in midfield alongside the more experienced Beni Baningime.
“But his performances with the Under-18s have been that good and his energy, pressing and regaining of the ball are phenomenal.
“He looks a really good player and he’s benefiting from playing alongside Beni. Beni at times again was the best player on the pitch tonight.”
According to the club’s official website, the teenager’s all-time idol is Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira and, in the Toffees’ current squad, he looks up to Andre Gomes the most. Clearly, Onyango likes a Rolls Royce of a midfielder whose not afraid to put his foot in when it’s needed – and that shines through in his performances.
