Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic and Rangers have both been linked with Derby County’s former Aberdeen loanee Max Lowe.

Max Lowe of Aberdeen during the Scottish Cup 5th Round match between Aberdeen and Queen of The South at Pittodrie Stadium on February 10, 2019 in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Celtic fans won’t want to admit it but they might have just opened the door for Rangers to sign the left-back they have needed ever since Lee Wallace peak years came to an end.

Boli Mbombo has now been unveiled as the latest addition to Neil Lennon’s Scottish Premiership winning squad, the Belgian flyer joining for £3 million from Austrian Bundesliga outfit Rapid Vienna on Wednesday.

That means Max Lowe, the Derby County youngster who shone at Aberdeen last season, won’t be returning north of the border in green and white stripes.

The Daily Record claimed in June that Celtic had made an enquiry about The Dons’ 2019 Young Player of the Year. That was before Mbombo, a quick-footed and swashbuckling full-back who started out as a winger, emerged as their number one target.

So Rangers might now have a free run at Lowe instead.

According to the Record, Steven Gerrard contacted his old friend Frank Lampard to ask whether the 22-year-old was available this summer.

With Lampard’s dream return to Chelsea becoming a reality at last and Phillip Cocu arriving in his place at Pride Park, it remains to be seen what the plans are for Lowe.b But, if he is still available, he might just be the final piece in Rangers’ jigsaw.

The Gers have signed a talented young centre-back in George Edmundson, a classy midfielder in Joe Aribo, two explosive wingers and a new striker in Greg Stewart. A left-back might be all they need now to really challenge for the title.
