Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon is overjoyed after completing a deal to sign recently released Aston Villa starlet Corey Blackett-Taylor on a free transfer, while speaking to the Wirral Globe.

At the age of 21, and with just a single first team appearance for Aston Villa under his belt, Blackett-Taylor appeared in need of a fresh start and he has now got exactly that at League One newcomers Tranmere.

The former England U17 international was let go by the newly promoted Premier League outfit when his contract expired at the end of the season, though Warwickshire-born Blackett-Taylor didn’t have to wait long to find a new club.

And Mellon, who is a modern-day legend on the Wirral after guiding Tranmere to successive promotions, clearly thinks he has bagged a real talent.

“He’s a player that we’ve known for a while as he progressed through the ranks at Aston Villa so we’re delighted to bring in such a promising talent,” the former Shrewsbury Town boss said.

“The fans will see a really honest lad who works his socks off with loads of pace and power and he has been brought up to play football, in what we consider, the right way.

“I’m looking forward to working with him and the Tranmere fans seeing what he can do.”

The challenge for Blackett-Taylor is to prove to Aston Villa that they should have given him more of a chance to prove himself at a higher level.

Villa have one of the most prosperous academies in English football and the winger must be a little disappointed that he never got a chance to shine under Dean Smith, a manager famous for turning young players into established, first-team stars.
