Do Hasenhuttl’s comments boost Rangers’ hopes over Steven Davis?

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing Steven Davis back to Ibrox in January.

Amid reports from the Belfast Telegraph suggesting that they are keen to bring Steven Davis back to Ibrox, Rangers face something of an anxious wait to see whether the change of management at the midfielder’s current club has an impact on how successful a Gers’ January bid would prove to be.

The Belfast Telegraph reported at the end of October that Rangers are eyeing an initial loan deal for the midfielder before potentially making the deal permanent in the summer.

The 33-year-old had made just two Premier League appearances under Mark Hughes this term, so it probably would not have surprised many if he was given the green light to leave Southampton in January if Rangers came calling.

But with Hughes now gone and replaced by Ralph Hasenhuttl, Steven Gerrard may feel less certain about being to get a deal done.

However, perhaps Hasenhuttl’s comments following his appointment – which have been reported by the Daily Echo – indicate that Rangers do not need to give up on trying to sign the Northern Ireland international, as he insisted that the squad he has inherited is too big.

“At first, I think the squad is very big, so we have a lot of positions where we have too much players and maybe one or the other is leaving us and we bring something new,” he said, as reported by the Daily Echo.

Midfield is certainly one area where the new Saints boss has a lot of options, so if he sees Davis having a peripheral role, perhaps he will be one of the players that will be allowed to leave.

Rangers should certainly consider acting swiftly if they are keen to bring Davis back to the club in case the Saints quickly receive offers from elsewhere that allow them to cut the squad size down to a number Hasenhuttl is much happier with.
