Former Lazio defender Wesley Hoedt has not made a Premier League appearance since Ralph Hasenhuttl replaced Mark Hughes at Southampton.
Ralph Hasenhuttl made it clear that he wanted to trim down his squad when taking over at Southampton a month ago. And two fringe players have already left St Mary’s in the first week of the January transfer window.
Steven Davis returned to Rangers on a short-term loan which could turn into a permanent transfer, while Manolo Gabbiadini will go back to Sampdoria in a deal that could cost £10.8 million, as reported by the Guardian.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hasenhuttl has confirmed that another player is also free to leave – the Dutch international centre-back Wesley Hoedt.
“It’s not the best (situation) for Wesley, that’s right. It’s the same for Gabbiadini or Steven. The guys went away to find other solutions, it’s better for them,” the former RB Leipzig boss said of the defender, who has not made a Premier League appearance since Mark Hughes was replaced.
“For Wesley it can be the same. We don’t send any player away but if he feels like he is not used like wants from us, he should think about it.”
The Sun (3 January, page 49) reported that Hoedt had been put up for sale by the Saints after falling behind Jan Bednarek, Maya Yoshida, Jack Stephens and Jannick Vestergaard in the pecking order.
The defender struggled to live up to expectations after arriving from Lazio for £15 million in the summer of 2017 and it seems that a mid-season departure would be the best solution for all parties.
So far, however, no clubs have been credited with an interest in Hoedt.
