Has Steve Walsh sacking ended Jamie Vardy’s reported Everton hopes?

Everton were reportedly aiming to raid Premier League rivals Leicester City for Jamie Vardy – and he was keen on a move to Goodison Park.

It seems very unlikely now that Jamie Vardy will be an Everton player when next season kicks off.

The Mirror reported in March that The Toffees had made Leicester City’s number nine their top summer transfer target with director of football Steve Walsh, who famously brought Vardy to the King Power from Fleetwood Town in 2012, understood to be driving the deal.

And The Mirror added that Vardy would jump at the chance to get a fresh start on Merseyside in the autumn of his career.

But Walsh has now gone, paying the price for an underwhelming pair of seasons at Goodison Park. The Telegraph state that the talent-spotter has been given his P45 along with departing manager Sam Allardyce.

So any hopes that Vardy might have had of wearing an Everton shirt next summer appear to be over.

The Toffees do need another centre-forward with Cenk Tosun the only player in Everton’s squad capable of filling the void left by the departure of Romelu Lukaku last summer. And 31-year-old Vardy has been one of the most lethal strikers in the Premier League over recent seasons, netting 20 in 37 games across 2017/18.

But Everton are set to embark on another new era with PSV’s stemmed technical director Marcel Brands replacing Walsh and the former Watford and Hull boss Marco Silva expected to be confirmed as the club’s next manager.

Silva and Brands will have their own targets – and it would be a surprise if Vardy was still an option.
