Midland rivals Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with Aberdeen’s Scottish Premiership centre-back Scott McKenna.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is under no illusions that his club face a challenge hanging onto the in-demand centre-back Scott McKenna during the January transfer window.
Speaking to the Press and Journal, McInnes admits that the 22-year-old has courted interest from clubs in the top two tiers of English football – and it seems that he has plenty of admirers in the Midlands in particular.
The Sun have claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa are both interested in McKenna, who the Daily Record believes is valued at an affordable £10 million.
But who would McKenna suit better; Premier League newcomers Wolves or Championship outfit Aston Villa?
Well, speaking to the Daily Record, the seven-time Scotland international has admitted that he feels far more at home in a back four, having struggled in a three-man defence during his country’s 2-1 Nations League defeat to Israel in October.

“Personally, I have played in a four a lot more at my club and I felt comfortable in it and I think that showed in the performance,” McKenna said after Scotland reverted to a traditional backline in the 4-0 away win at Albania on Saturday.
Worryingly for Wolves, Nuno Espirito Santo has fielded a three-man defence ever since taking over at Molineux – so should he have second thoughts about a player who has admitted he struggles to adapt to such a formation?
Dean Smith’s Aston Villa, then, could be a better fit if McKenna is willing to reject the Premier League for the Championship.
