Championship giants Leeds United were linked with a shock move to bring Hannover striker Charlison Benschop to Elland Road from the Bundesliga in January.

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Leeds United were linked with a move for Hannover striker Charlison Benschop in the January transfer window, as reported by Dutch publication Voetbal Primeur.

The Curacao international is far from a prolific goalscorer and, in three years with the Bundesliga club, he mustered a grand total of just two league goals.

A typical Victor Orta signing, then, the cynics might have mused as the other strikers brought to Elland Road by the under-fire director of football find goals equally hard to come by.

Benschop, the report added, is out of contract at the end of the season and, while no move to Leeds materialised in January, there is little reason to suggest they should snap the 28-year-old up on a free in a few months’ time.

Life has hardly got any easier for the former Dusseldorf front-man since those links with Leeds emerged. He has played just 20 minutes of football in the last two months and, in customary fashion, failed to score a single goal.

Considering that he has not hit the net in league football since the 2015/16 season, Leeds have surely got to be aiming their sights far higher than Benschop when the summer transfer window opens.

And Orta should know that his reputation will not be improved by anther misfiring centre-forward.
