Newcastle United are bottom of the Premier League after Rafa Benitez’s side lost 1-0 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

It seems a long time now since Newcastle United thrashed Chelsea 3-0 at St James’ Park in May, cementing their place in the top half of the Premier League table.

Things could hardly be more different now. A depressing 1-0 home defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion, Chris Hughton’s Brighton no less, leaves the Magpies bottom of the table with just two points from a potential 27 so far.

Speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (22 October, 9:00am), Harry Redknapp admits that this latest loss was a particular low point and has compared Newcastle to fellow strugglers Cardiff.

“That was the game you look at where you’d mark down as a win. Brighton at home you’ve got to be looking to pick points up. So that is a massive loss,” Redknapp said.

“Rafa (Benitez) has been quiet, he’s not complained about the lack of transfers. They were too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier (like Cardiff).

“They haven’t bought, haven’t strengthened their squad.”

It is well documented that Newcastle have been operating with one hand tied behind their back due to the lack of investment provided by owner Mike Ashley in recent transfer windows. The Tyneside giants spent just over £20 million in the summer, with the likes of Ki Sung-Yeung, Yoshinori Muto and Fabian Schar yet to really make an impact.

The one upside, however, is that Newcastle are three points from safety so they have not been cut adrift just yet.
