Championship side Nottingham Forest are reportedly challenging Bristol City and Ipswich Town for Peteborough United’s League One star Gwion Edwards

Ashkan Dejagah of Fulham scores his team's first goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Fulham and Everton at Craven Cottage on March 30, 2014 in London, England.

A number of the players brought into Nottingham Forest during a hectic January transfer window made a real impression at the City Ground. Ashkhan Dejagah was not one of them.

The former Fulham winger arrived on a free transfer four months ago but played just 14 minutes of Championship football, all coming in a 2-0 defeat to Fulham in early February, and was never seen again. The 31-year-old Iranian international has now been released upon the expiry of his contract.

And Forest could have a replacement lined up already; a younger alternative who deserves the chance to make the step up at Championship level.

HITC sources told us last week that Forest were rivalling Ipswich Town and Bristol City for the impressive Peterborough United winger Gwion Edwards, who is regarded as one of the most exciting attacking talents outside the top two divisions.

The former Swansea City youngster moved to London Road from Crawley Town in 2016 and impressed hugely last season, scoring seven goals and setting up another five in all competitions.

And, like the now unattached Dejagah, it could be his versatility that wins the heart of Aitor Karanka. Edwards is at his most comfortable on the left wing but is capable of flitting across to the right and also playing at centre-forward if required.

Nottingham Forest finished in a very disappointing 17th place last season so replacing players like Dejagah, whose best days are behind them, with a rising star like Edwards is a positive step in the right direction.
