Premier League newcomers Aston Villa have signed Matt Targett from Southampton, one year after Fulham saw a bigger bid rejected.

Aston Villa were made to wait but Matt Targett has finally been confirmed.

Sky Sports reported on Saturday that the Premier League newcomers had agreed an £11 million deal with Southampton and, two days later, the left-back’s move was officially announced.

And considering that Aston Villa haven’t had a top quality defender on the left hand side for a number of years, the former England U21 international already looks like an inspired addition to Dean Smith’s side.

He is certainly an upgrade on the unconvincing Neil Taylor, who has looked a shadow of his former self ever since he pulled on that claret and blue shirt back in January 2018.

But, while Aston Villa fans are thrilled, Fulham supporters have been left with their head in their hands, their eyes green with jealousy.

After all, Fulham had their chance to sign Targett last summer though Southampton weren’t willing to sell back then. According to TEAMtalk, The Cottagers even offered £14 million for a player who made a big impression during a loan spell in West London during the 2017/18 season.

One year on, Southampton have sold their academy graduate for £3 million less. And this hasn’t gone down too well at Craven Cottage.
