Leeds United headed into this week’s match against Derby County knowing victory was vital, so when Pierre-Michel Lasogga put them ahead after just seven minutes it seemed things were going to plan.

Thomas Christiansen had Hadi Sacko and Jay-Roy Grot on the bench, and both came on with the hosts chasing a vital second goal after Winnall had equalised for Derby. But neither player was able to make a notable contribution at the right end of the field and one wonders what might have happened if Leeds had more attacking quality to call on.

Grot’s age and Sacko’s erratic performances mean neither should be relied upon to change the game late on, and one wonders if Pawel Cibicki would have done better or if Leeds have simply not got enough in reserve.

In time Grot should become an effective front man, but Sacko looks destined to frustrate more than excite, and on this evidence Leeds simply do not have enough when their Plan A falls short.

There is always January to fix the problem, but having brought in so many players in the summer it remains to be seen if Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani would be willing to sanction another big spend.
