After half a season in the Scottish Premiership with Rangers, Greg Docherty has joined League One Shrewsbury Town on loan

Well that didn’t last long. Just 14 games after his protracted £675,000 move from Hamilton in the January transfer window, Greg Docherty was on his way out of Ibrox.

Like Jason Holt, Harry Forrester, Bruno Alves and co, the 21-year-old midfielder was a victim of Rangers’ summer cull. The arrival of Steven Gerrard as manager coincided with the addition of a number of new central midfielders, meaning Docherty found himself well down the pecking order.

After failing to feature in any of Rangers’ Europa League qualifiers or the opening day Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen, Docherty was loaned out to League One outfit Shrewsbury Town.

And in quotes reported by the Daily Record (live blog, 8.03am), the energetic youngster has explained why leaving Rangers after just seven months was seen as the right idea.

“Coming down here, I want to play games, I want to experience this league. I know it’s a tough, relentless league with a lot of games but that’s what I want,” Docherty said.

“I’m at the stage where I need to play. That’s what me and my manager at Rangers agreed on. I need to play games consistently to take me to that next step and coming down here can open a lot of doors for me.”

Docherty made his debut in Shrewsbury’s 2-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic on Saturday and is expected to play a big role for last season’s League One play-off finalists, who lost influential midfielder Jon Nolan to Ipswich Town.

At Rangers, however, he would have been behind Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria, Lassana Coulibaly and Ryan Jack in the pecking order, not to mention the injured Graham Dorrans.
