Ademola Lookman is barely playing in the Premier League with Everton – but he could have a massive impact on Southampton’s prospects.

It seems that the South Coast side are sleepwalking towards relegation this season under Mark Hughes, having only snapped out their slumber in the nick of time towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, former Southampton forward Gordon Watson is certainly of the opinion that fresh faces are required. And there’s one player in particular that he would love to see light up the St Mary’s turf.

“I thought we should have gone for (Ademola) Lookman or someone like that with pace to get fans on the edge of their seat and create chances,” said Watson, who played for Southampton between 1995 and 1997.

21-year-old winger Lookman has played just 130 minutes of Premier League football for Everton this season but, on paper, would be a fine addition for a Southampton side lacking pace, cutting edge and unpredictability in the final third.

Though, in truth, Southampton have struggled at both ends of the pitch so far this season. Watson believes that a replacement for former fans favourite Graziano Pelle, who left for Shandong Luneng in 2016, is a must while an upgrade at centre-back wouldn’t go amiss either.

“We haven’t replaced Pelle and got away with that last year. We also need a leader at the back because our leader is Yoshida, who’s perfect in a three but I’m not so sure in a two.”
