Alfredo Morelos has scored 20 goals for Scottish Premiership title chasers Rangers this season but Jermain Defoe has now arrived at Ibrox.

The future of Alfredo Morelos at Rangers has once again come under question, with Jermain Defoe on his way to Ibrox this week.

The Colombian striker has been prolific in front of goal this season, scoring 20 goals in 35 games in all competitions. But it is the other side of his game that has hogged the headlines for all the wrong reasons of late.

Morelos has been sent off three times while picking up another 13 bookings, with his ongoing disciplinary issues overshadowing his qualities in the final third.

The former HJK Helsinki forward was perhaps unfortunate not to be sent off again or even banned retrospectively in the 1-0 win against Celtic in December when he was involved in a number of unseemly flash points.

And, speaking to the Sunday Post, former Rangers player Gordon Smith has suggested that Rangers should seriously consider whether they should persist with Morelos now that Defoe has arrived.

“It will be interesting to see if the move now opens the door for Alfredo Morelos to be sold on for big money,” said Smith, who played for Rangers between 1977 and 1980 before returning to the club as director of football.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers arrives prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premier League between Celtic and at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“With 20 goals and 10 assists to his credit, the Colombian is a potent attacking weapon. However, he is also a liability.

“It is fine to have aggression in your game, but it has to be channelled in the right way. Morelos doesn’t show any signs of being able to do that.

“Selling him on for big money may be the solution.”

There is unlikely to be a shortage of interest in Morelos, who was linked with big-money moves to clubs in China and France about a year ago.

But, with Rangers harbouring genuine hopes of ending Celtic’s seven-year domination of Scottish football, do not expect Steven Gerrard to be willing to let his top-scorer go midway through the campaign.
