Glen Johnson has taken aim at West Ham United after the Premier League outfit were obliterated 4-0 by third tier Oxford United in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday night, speaking to talkSPORT (26 September, 11:00am).

There was a jubilant feel around the camp heading to the Kassam Stadium in midweek. Manuel Pellegrini’s side had just beaten Manchester United convincingly to move up to fifth in the table.

But the feel good factor came crashing down as West Ham were left battered, bruised and humiliated away at League One Oxford. Just four days after Karl Robinson’s side smashed six past Lincoln City, Matt Taylor, Elliott Moore, Tariq Fosu and Shandon Baptiste put the Hammers to the sword.

No wonder the former Hammers right-back Johnson was left baffled, wondering if Pellegrini really had to make nine changes to his starting XI.

“I’m not happy. (The EFL Cup) is the easiest trophy you can win,” Johnson fumed.

“They’re not going to win the Premier League. There’s a few big hitters getting knocked out and another easy round and you’re in the semi-finals.

“To be hammered 4-0, that’s getting battered, destroyed. They made nine changes and they’ve clearly been played off the park by a mid-table League One side. Nine changes is blatantly saying ‘I not bothered’.”

West Ham have not won a trophy in 40 years and they won’t be winning one this season either, unless Pellegrini changes his mindset before the FA Cup begins in January. Remember, this is a manager who was embarrassed by AFC Wimbledon eight months ago too.
